The Leeds Assessment Centre was established at the University of Leeds Equality Service in 2000, to provide a high quality Needs Assessments service for disabled higher education students, usually as a part of an application for disability support funding, such as Disabled Students’ Allowances.
The aim of our service is to produce a clear and detailed analysis of how your disability impacts on your higher education, so that you can better understand and take more control over your own learning. As a part of this we aim to produce specific and appropriate recommendations on disability support and adjustments that can act as a guide to you, your institution and your support funding body.
The Leeds Assessment Centre is a member of the National Network of Assessment Centres (NNAC) and is accredited with the quality standards organisation DSA-QAG (Disabled Students Allowance Quality Assurance Group).
How do I book a Needs Assessment?
If you have received written approval from your funding provider please contact the Leeds Assessment Centre and ask to make a Needs Assessment appointment. Please tell us if you have any specific access requirements, for example if you need disabled parking or communication support.
We will log your enquiry, book you in and contact you confirming the date and time of your appointment. We will also provide the name of the Assessor and explain the next steps.
What will I need to do after I have booked the assessment?
If you have not already done so, you will have to provide us with the following:
- a copy of the approval letter from your disability support funding provider for example, Student Finance England,
- a copy of your Evidence of disability,
- a completed pre-assessment questionnaire that we will send you with our appointment letter.
If you don’t have approval from your funding provider we are not allowed to book you in for a Needs Assessment. If you don’t provide us with a copy of the letter from your funding provider, or your evidence of disability, in 5 working days we have to cancel your appointment.
What if I have to change or cancel my Needs Assessment appointment?
Please contact us as soon as you can to discuss this with us.
If you cancel with less than two working days’ notice, or don’t show up for your appointment, we may have to charge you £50 to pay for the Assessor’s time.
What is the current waiting time for a Needs Assessment?
Currently we can provide an assessment within 15 working days of your initial request in most cases. Please note that waiting times can vary depending on the availability of appropriately skilled assessors.
You can find out more information on our Needs Assessments page.
