Deaf or hard of hearing students

Many people are deaf or have a level of hearing impairment – for example:

  • you may be profoundly deaf
  • you may have a slight hearing impairment
  • one or both ears may be affected
  • you may have had a hearing impairment since birth or early childhood or, alternatively, you may have developed your hearing impairment more recently.

You may communicate using sign language, by lipreading, or you may use hearing aids. You might consider yourself as part of the Deaf community, as partially deaf, as partially hearing or not label yourself at all.

You may need to concentrate when communicating with people and use guesswork some of time. Many activities may be easy for you, but some parts of university life may create difficulties – for example, background noise, talking in groups, taking notes in lectures or learning new vocabulary. If any of this applies to you, then you will be one of nine million deaf or hard of hearing people in the UK, as well as being one of many deaf or hard of hearing students at the University of Leeds.

To access study support services through the Equality Service, your disability/impairment needs to have lasted, or be likely to last, for 12 months or more and have an impact on your studies. To access some of our services, you will also need to provide medical evidence.
